Overview

FAR EASTERN NEPAL, HIMALAYA

The Third-Highest Mountain on Earth

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is a spectacular and challenging adventure that leads trekkers to the foot of the world’s third-highest mountain, Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586 m). Set in the far eastern reaches of Nepal, close to the borders of India (Sikkim) and Tibet, the trek offers a rare blend of raw Himalayan wilderness, rich cultural heritage, and dramatic alpine scenery.
Unlike the more commercialized routes to Everest or Annapurna, Kanchenjunga remains genuinely off the beaten path. The region opened to foreign trekkers only in the mid-1980s and is still a restricted area, requiring special permits and a registered guide — a rule that has helped preserve its pristine environment and traditional way of life.

TWO BASE CAMPS
The Kanchenjunga circuit takes in two base camps: the North Base Camp at Pangpema, with close-up views of the mountain’s north face, and the South Base Camp at Oktang, facing the glaciers of the south. This itinerary links both via high passes and deep river valleys, crossing lush subtropical forest, alpine meadow, and glacial moraine, and passing through villages of the Limbu, Rai, Sherpa, and Tamang communities.

WILDLIFE & CONSERVATION
The route passes through the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, home to rare flora and fauna including the red panda, snow leopard, and Himalayan black bear, alongside numerous species of birds and butterflies. Good physical conditioning and prior high-altitude trekking experience are strongly recommended, and trekkers should be prepared for basic teahouse accommodation and limited infrastructure along the trail.
