Overview
A remote classic in the Annapurna Himalaya
Mt. Himlung, 7,126 metres, rises above Nar Phu in the Annapurna region — a peak only recently opened to climbers. The approach to base camp takes just over a week, threading through some of the remotest corners of Nepal via the picturesque villages of Koto and stone-walled Phu, close to the Tibetan border. It is a journey as rich in culture as it is in scenery.
Himlung is one of the most frequently climbed 7,000-metre peaks in Nepal and is not technically demanding, making it an excellent introduction for climbers with ambitions on the 8,000-metre giants. The trip begins in Kathmandu and drives to Besisahar, following the Annapurna trail for acclimatisation before crossing the Kangla Pass at 5,306 metres into Nar Phu — taking in the most celebrated sections of the Annapurna Circuit before venturing into truly untouched territory.
