Mother’s Necklace
Ama Dablam means “Mother’s necklace” in the Sherpa language. The long ridges on each side are like the arms of a mother (ama) protecting her child, and the hanging glacier is known as the Dablam, a traditional double pendant worn by Sherpa women.
The most climbed route is the Southwest Ridge, the right skyline. Ama Dablam was first climbed on 13 March 1961 by Mike Gill (NZ), Barry Bishop (US), Mike Ward (UK), and Wally Romanes (NZ). It is one of the most spectacular mountains in the world, and no wonder it catches the eye of every climber it is also one of the more technical peaks to attempt.
